What dress styles do you like? 

When it comes to dresses, there are about a zillion different styles to choose from like A-line, trumpet, mermaid, tea length, princess, and mini. Before you narrow your search down to one style, it’s important that you know what each of them look like.

An A-line dress typically features a tight bodice and then flows out to have a hem that is wider than your shoulders.

Trumpet dresses have a fit-and-flare style that hugs all the way down to your lower hip, flaring outwards at the bottom. It is similar to a mermaid dress but the flare starts slightly higher.

A mermaid-style dress is tight at the top and then flares outwards around your knees.

Tea length and mini dresses refer to where the hem of the dress lands on your leg. While shorter dresses aren’t super common for prom, it can be a rather edgy look.

Last but not least, princess dresses are the classic ball gown—tight at the top with a fluffy skirt that extends to the floor.

How much of a statement do you want to make?

 If you tend to shy away from attention, prom might not be the time to show up in a neon green dress. However, ladies who love basking in attention from others should most definitely opt for a neon or printed dress. Necklines can be modest, moderately revealing, or super revealing, depending on the style that you go for. Strapless dresses are popular for prom but the dress should fit you well enough that you aren’t tugging it upwards all night as that will seriously interfere with your back moves. Asymmetrical or one shoulder dresses are great for drawing attention to your face and earrings.

Some ladies feel prettiest when wearing a simple square neckline with spaghetti straps. This is a classic neckline and you will never regret choosing a style that is timeless.

Most recently, high necklines have become a hit in the fashion world. These are quite sophisticated and will allow you to play around with statement earrings as necklaces don’t work with this type of neckline.

What colors or patterns do you like the look of?

Are you more of a neutral kinda gal or do you like bold, daring prints? If you’re unsure, go take a peek at the clothes hanging in your closet as they can give you some hints as to what you like. Prom dresses come in all sorts of colors like neutrals, pastels, and even neons. They also come in tons of funky and subtle prints like polkadots, florals, and paisley. When it comes to prom dress shopping, it’s hard to not listen to the opinions of others. If you go dress shopping with your friends or family members, take their comments into consideration but ultimately, you need to pick the dress that makes you the most comfortable and happiest. It’s also a great idea to try on as many colors and styles as possible as you might end up choosing something totally unexpected! Sometimes what you think you like isn’t as flattering or comfortable as you had hoped and other dresses may surprise you in the best way possible.
